“Behold now, his strength in his loins, and his power in the muscles of his belly.” Job 40:16
Having a healthy gut is the key to having a healthy body and having your body functioning optimally. What we eat makes a big difference in how the body functions and repair itself. It is the basis of our immune system and our immune system functions as a barrier to all diseases.
Gastroenterologists along with doctors of other disciplines such as cardiology have really been emphasizing the importance of having a healthy digestive system. Many of doctors along with Registered Dieticians have been stating the mantra “food is medicine”. This is not to say that food alone is the ultimate practice to healing, but it plays a greater role than traditionally thought, especially in Western cultures…specifically here in the United States. The total picture of practicing good health includes diet, exercise, and sleep, among other things. However, today we will focus on the gut.
Having a healthy gut has many benefits. Benefits such as increased energy, clearer skin, better mood, less risk of diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. In her program GUTBLISS, one of the country’s leading Gastroenterologists Dr. Robynne Chutkan breaks down the mechanics of having and achieving digestive wellness. Her program aired in March of 2019. You might find it on Your local PBS station’s YouTube channel.
Making small changes that lead to bigger changes can make a great impact on your entire health and lifestyle. Vitamins and minerals are an important factor in being healthy. We get these vitamins and minerals from the foods we eat. The gut processes those nutrients and eliminates waste. If our digestive system is at its optimal functioning state then the process works smoothly. If not, then issues such as constipation, asthma, thyroiditis, among many other issues that can arise. Our gut is the largest part of our immune system. Our immunes system is the key to everything.
So, start your healing process by having a healthy digestive system. Stay tuned for part 2, where I will discuss steps to having a healthy gut.
