CBD...Why not?

The use of CBD has caused a stir in the health industry and lots of discussion. It seems that CBD has become another trend, when really, it’s been used for its medicinal benefits for years in fact decades. In Jamaica where I am from, members of the Rastafarian community smoke marijuana as a part of their daily ritual and for its medicinal purposes. For them it’s a practice that produces a sense of community and calm to the Spirit. They also don’t refer to it by its Street name. They refer to marijuana as Wisdom Weed or Holy Herb. One of their philosophies is to practice meditation and be in a calm state of mind. Smoking marijuana does give a high and a calming effect at the same time. People have been using marijuana or cannabis for recreational use for years and it can lead to abuse and turn into addiction. However, let’s focus on the health benefits of cannabis or CBD as it’s commonly called. Before I discuss the health benefits, let’s talk about the various names of cannabis or marijuana and its ingredients.

Marijuana originates from the hemp plant and is scientifically known as cannabis sativa. Even though marijuana is now called cannabis on a regular basis, it also has some generally known Street names. Street names such as grass, hashish, joint, Mary Jane, pot, reefer, weed. In addition, the main active ingredient in cannabis is THC. THC is the component that works on your Central Nervous System/your brain which releases dopamine, a chemical that affects your mood and thinking. This form of THC is a form that is used by many people for various health issues. However, it is important to know that buying right form of cannabis is important, as THC just like any chemical albeit plant based does have side effects and affects everyone differently. This leads to the fact the concentration of THC in the cannabis that you buy is very important. It is also important to know that you can buy cannabis in the oil form without THC. Speaking of oil, CBD oil that is THC free comes in 2 forms: isolate and broad-spectrum. The isolate only contains the CBD while the broad-spectrum form contains various types of cannabis but contains no THC. To choose the right form of cannabis for you and your needs, it is important to find a Certified Cannabis supplier that really knows the cannabis plant, forms, and properties. If you live in Indiana, where I live, one of these Certified vendors is Alsum Organics in Plainfield. Now that we have talked about some of the properties of cannabis and its forms, let’s talk about the good it can do. One of the main resurgences of cannabis was for cancer patients. Cannabis helped these patients with their pain and other effects of chemotherapy and radiation. There are also several other medicinal uses, such as:

Anxiety, depression, insomnia, chronic pain, effects of nerve damage, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis among other conditions. Which leads me to mention that because of this, the fight to legalize marijuana for medicinal purposes in various forms begun and now several cities and states have legalized marijuana, and the cannabis supplement and oil business has skyrocketed. So, remember, find the right supplier and buy the right type of cannabis that suits your health needs. Also, remember it’s okay to do what’s best for your health and it’s okay to choose an alternative…and why not CBD?
